Not fun to think about. The truth is, there are millions of Americans facing that very problem. Long term illnesses with no health coverage. These people can not get health coverage for two reasons, one, they can't afford the high cost of health insurance and two, once you are diagnosed with a long term or serious illness, insurance companies do not want to cover you. Your' illness would affect their' bottom line.
The number of women facing breast cancer without insurance is quickly rising. The number of people with major illness and no health coverage is rising. What are people to do when forced to choose between paying the electric bill or paying for doctor appointments and medicine? The help that is offered through government and drug companies is often not enough and patients are still faced with making heartbreaking choices. Many are asking the same question; "What do I do?"
Healthcare in this country isn't going to change until we have a new president and who is to say the next president will keep his or her promises anyway? For many, the situation looks hopeless.
One group has decided to "take it to the people". So often we hear it said that if we only took care of one another, there would be fewer problems in the world. So let's put it to the test!
There is a new group on Yahoo!groups called "doughn8adollar". It is a place for the uninsured and underinsured to go to get help with those medical bills. Members post their' story and list their' paypal email at the end of their' post. The rest of the group then donates a dollar or however much they like from their' own paypal accounts to help defray the costs of doctor appointments and prescriptions.
Members can meet people in the same situation, who share the fear and frustration of facing illness without adequate health coverage. Members share advice, listen to one another and most importantly, help one another.
So can a dollar change a life? Yes. If caring people band together for the common good.
We are a nation of caring, compassionate people who want to help but for the most part, do not know how. Recent reports have shown that when we donate to a charity, less than half of what we donate actually makes it to that cause. In many cases, less than ten percent actually makes it to the charity and we end up helping noone.
Doughn8adollar has no overhead expenses and takes no percentage of any donation. Rather, you donate directly to the person that you want to help. This insures that all of your' donation gets to the person in need. Finally! A place where things are done right!
As I said earlier, this is a new group and is looking for new members. If you want to check them out, you can find them at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/doughn8adollar
