Can the Earth Be Saved?

Benjamin Ira Mikell

Millions of dollars continue to be spent on promoting the idea that we must do certain things in order to "save the earth." Companies spend more money on creating, testing, and selling products that are intended to help "save the environment." But, is all that time, money, and effort worth it?

There are several problems with this belief. First, and foremost, is the fact that it is God who is in complete control of the earth. He is the one who created it and has the ultimate power in deciding when the world should be destroyed. When God created man, the only two things that he required him to do in regards to the earth was to populate and take care of it to the best of his ability. Although we are to do everything we can to improve our lives as well as create and do things that will protect nature, we must always remember that it is God who has the power to extend the life of the earth as long as He desires and destroy it in His own time.

The other problem is that it is a form of idolatry. Whenever we use terms such as "Mother Nature," for example, we are, in a sense, guilty of practicing idolatry. Furthermore, we are believe that it is the earth that blesses us with many good things. To the contrary, it is God, through the ability of man and the earth itself, who blesses us with many good things. In other words, God provides the bounty, not the earth by itself.

As previously mentioned, there is nothing wrong in making sure we protect the things around us as we improve our lives in various ways. We just need to make sure that we always remember that God is in control of the earth and has the power to determine how long it will exist.
