Can E-Cigarettes Really Help You Quit Smoking?
Will Using an Electronic Cigarette Help You Kick the Habit for Good?
I bought myself a gift for Christmas that I am beginning to believe is the best investment I have ever made to my health. I purchased a discount electronic cigarette. Unsure if I would really stick with this, as I have tried lozenges, gums, patches and pills with no success but a great deal of stress. I decided against investing a great deal of money until, I determined if this method would work. Barely forty-eight hours later, I have ordered more cartridges, so I will have a supply on hand and am exploring a better quality electronic cigarette.
Inside of forty-eight hours with a very small amount of conscious effort, I still have almost half a pack of regular cigarettes sitting on my nightstand that haven't been touched in the past twenty-two hours, including after eating. This pack was open two days ago before my electronic cigarette arrived in the mail. I usually go through about fifteen cigarettes a day. In essence, I have quit smoking; at least the part that will feed into my family history of heart and lung disease due to smoking.
I won't say I haven't had a craving for a regular cigarette and I have not denied myself that cigarette when the craving gets intense. The first twenty- four hours, I had about five regular cigarettes. By the time, I smoked my last cigarette yesterday, I had discovered what it felt like to take a breath and not hack or cough, I could feel air actually getting into my lungs. For the first time in more years than I can even remember I did not wake up last night coughing and I could breathe through my nose freely by midnight (last cigarette was at 4PM). I always believed that I had bad sinuses. My lungs are clearing, I cough "slightly" but there is no phlegm or choking as there has been for many years.
I won't tell you that this is the best way to give up smoking but I know for myself it has to be better than what I have been doing to my body. I can breathe! I don't have to layer myself in clothes and blankets to run outside in the middle of a Michigan winter to have a cigarette. My brother with whom I share a home, has asthma, the electronic cigarette does not irritate his breathing.
I was not expecting such a fast and drastic change in my lungs and sinuses in barely two days. I really did not expect this option to work so fast that I could truly resist the urge for a real cigarette with little effort in such a short time. I did not expect to actually prefer the way I feel with the electronic cigarette over a regular cigarette but I have been pleasantly surprised to find all of these things have occurred.
Before you run out and purchase one of these cigarettes there are some things to consider. First and foremost, do your own research, there are some suspected health risks but I have not been able to find any solid research on this, educate yourself and make a decision on what is best for you. Talk to your doctor, especially if you already have health issues and determine if this is a good and safe alternative for you.
Remember, the electronic cigarette is not as easy to smoke as a regular cigarette; you will have to find a way to get the right amount of vapor for your taste. Many electronic cigarettes don't produce the "smoke" easily. I have a discount electronic cigarette and I have found that by covering the air holes when I inhale, it produces the "smoke" easier. You will have to adapt.
In the beginning, you will crave a regular cigarette as you adapt to one that doesn't go out. You will have to work harder to smoke until you get used to this new way. In addition, your body is not only used to the nicotine, (which you can get cartridges with or without nicotine) but it is probably addicted to the other chemicals that are added to a regular cigarette. You will have to put in some effort to eliminate the regular cigarettes.
The switch hasn't been that difficult for me. The easier my breathing has become the more I like that feel. The last cigarette I smoked didn't feel good or taste good. I didn't like the tight feeling that I felt in my lungs afterwards and I found myself annoyed with going with the cigarette that made me feel that way.
If you are even think you might want to quit smoking but know you are not ready to give up the habit the electronic cigarette might be an option for you. I know I am thrilled with the results.
There are several manufactures for electronic cigarettes and while I suggest trying a cheaper one to see if it will work for you, I also strongly suggest investing in a better one as soon as you have decided to stick with the electronic cigarette.
The one I am considering for myself is Green Smokes, as they don't use extra chemicals in their cartridges. They have a reputation for being one of the best out there along with excellent customer service. I intend to try this one for myself. While their prices are a little higher, is the cost of two cartons of cigarettes worth better health? There are many brands out there and vary in price. Do some research and determine which is best for you.
I will once again say, the healthiest choice will always be to simply quit smoking in any manner but if you are really finding that impossible, I suggest at least exploring this option. I still get the part of smoking that I enjoy without nicotine withdrawal even though I intend to reduce the intake of the nicotine as I go along. My nervous hands still have a cigarette to hold but my hair, breath, clothes and environment don't smell bad. I have also discovered, I like how good it feels to just breathe.
