Can Facebook Help You Plan Your Wedding?

Kori Rodley Irons
The days of the written and mailed invitation to an ordinary party or celebration seem to be passing. Instead, we tend to favor email, Facebook, and other online social networking sites as the best way to invite people to events, parties and activities. What does this mean for wedding planners? Can Facebook be a useful (or offensive) tool when it comes to planning a wedding?

A site like Facebook, can be an excellent tool for getting and staying connected. When it comes to wedding planning, half the battle is deciding on a guest list and accumulating all the contact information for guests. Facebook and other online social networking sites can be a good resource in accomplishing that big task. Finding friends and relatives and making sure that you have current mailing addresses can make good use of the internet. While many of us have phone numbers and email addresses for our friends and relatives, it is less common to keep track of physical addresses.

It is still considered good etiquette to send out an actual paper invitation and this can help you to keep close tabs on who has been invited. Of course, it is possible to "go green" and paperless and use email or an invitation site such as evite.com to invite individuals to a wedding, but take care that the means you use for invitations matches the type of wedding you want to have. A super formal wedding deserves formal invitations, while a smaller, more intimate home wedding might be fine with email invitations.

Facebook can be a good tool for sharing directions, other wedding details, and contacting long-lost relatives. Additionally, you may have noticed that the marketing on Facebook is so directed, that you will likely get plenty of advertisements and click-through marketing that is wedding-related. This may help you to discover vendors and options for wedding-related items if your shopping time is limited.
