Can God Save America? Will He? Should He?

In a moment of prayer this morning, I was reflecting on the TV news. Three little brothers still haven't been found and the worst is assumed. Illinois seems to be more worried about gay rights than unemployment. Charlie Rangel continues to be in Congress while most Americans would have been in jail for tax problems. Movies and TV seem to get more vile and despicable than we imagined it could ever get.

God is in control and He could set it right. But will He? Will God think America is worth saving? We continue to kill millions of babies. If you are Christian, you know these babies are God's children first and foremost. We watch our government get greedier for money and power every day while the Bible tells us that we cannot serve two gods. It appears that these things have all replaced the Ten Commandments that God gave us to follow.

We seem to be more worried about getting more gambling places than feeding the hungry. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you has all but been forgotten. Take a peek into the laws that Congress hands down that they themselves do not have to abide by. My father gave his word and a handshake and would have died before he broke trust and honor. Today, any business transaction takes lawyers and the words trust and honor don't mean much.

Maybe my view comes from my age. I came to God at age 40 and I have seen and experienced God's grace, forgiveness and blessings. I have seen God's healing of body, mind, emotions and spirituality. I know God's power and yet I cannot fathom it totally. The word awesome doesn't cover God, but its a start.

Are there enough Christians left that put God over everything else? Will they pray hard enough to garner favor from God for America's future? Is that even a good idea? Maybe its always been about choices and a chosen few. Moses came off of the mount in time to see people worshiping a golden calf. Yet in the end, the true believers made it to the promised land.

I always end up thinking about the Bible telling us that chunks will fall out of the sky and kill someone right next to us, but we will be spared. What would America look like if this happened? Its time for America to get right with God. God CAN save us, but maybe we should give Him a good reason to.

It is the time to wonder.

You and I think a lot a like. I have been wondering about this a lot too. My thoughts and feelings are so mixed. I still want to believe there are more good, kind and God-fearing people left in our country to turn things around. But then something happens to make that seem more like a dream than a reality. It seems we are often good in a tragedy (e.g., Oklahoma City bombing and the World Trade Center). But once that is over we go right back to ways that sometimes make me cringe. I think we are being tested right now and so far I fear we are failing this latest test. It makes me sad and it is frightening too.
