Can Houston Nutt Deliver in 2009 and Earn Coach of the Year Honors?

JM Van Horn
The expectations are high for Houston Nutt and the University of Mississippi in the upcoming 2009 college football season. The Rebels are current ranked 8th in the AP poll and 10th in the USA Today poll to start the season. The only question is can Houston Nutt deliver on what the fans and college experts are expecting.

Houston Nutt began his coaching tenure back in 1993 when he took the head coach position with Murray State University, followed by a brief stint with Boise State University. In 1997, Nutt joined the ranks of the SEC when he became the head coach of the University of Arkansas.

During his time as head coach of the Razorbacks, Nutt led the team to an overall record of 75 - 48, which is ranked second all-time in the history of the program. Despite his success, Nutt resigned from his position with the University of Arkansas amid numerous controversies.

This did not sway the University of Mississippi from hiring Houston Nutt to be the next head coach of their program. During his first season with the Rebels, Nutt led the team to a 9 - 4 record with an appearance in the Cotton Bowl.

To say the 2009 schedule is the key for Nutt and the Rebels would be an understatement.

Two of the obvious games to focus on will be when they play host to Alabama and LSU. If the Rebels are able to secure a win over both teams, they should be in contention for the SEC championship game and a chance at a BCS berth.

The real problem for their success in the coming year does not involve the games listed above. Rather it centers on the two games the Rebels will be playing before the big showdowns.

In 2008, the team showed they were too focused on the marquee match-ups like when they lost to teams like Vanderbilt or South Carolina. If Houston Nutt is going to earn votes for the 2009 Coach of the Year, he will need to make sure his team remains focused for each and every game and are not looking forward to the next.

In the end, the University of Mississippi and Houston Nutt will fall short in 2009, keeping him on the outside looking in when it comes to the Coach of the Year award.
