Can Hypnosis Improve Your Life or Just Make You Believe it Has?

Allen Bell
Many people believe that hypnosis is the answer to many issues causing problems in their lives. I am talking about therapeutic hypnosis not Vegas "you're a dog now bark" hypnosis. The question is though can hypnosis really improve your life or just make you think it is improved. Granted, if you believe your life is improved, then to that person it is improved, but is their really substance to back it.

Hypnosis is a mental state often described as trance like. It is brought on by an organized pattern of verbal suggestions, which usually begins with the suggestion of relaxation. This can be done by a hypnotist, psychiatrist trained in hypnotherapy or some people can do self-hypnosis. In the 19th century, a Scottish physician named James Braid coined the phrase "Hypnosis".

Hypnosis can be used for many purposes, such as to relieve pain, childbirth, weight loss, a method of habit control and many other uses. Also many of have seen stage shows where hypnosis is used as a form of entertainment. Research on the uses of hypnosis is still relatively young. There are possibly many unknown uses for hypnotism.

Many psychiatrist use hypnosis to help patients overcome phobias, break bad habits, or to help a patient overcome childhood trauma or abuse. In the case of treating childhood trauma or abuse, hypnotism is used when treatment is at a standstill due to the patient not being able to recall the incident that occurred when they were young. When the patient is able to recall the event under hypnosis, it can help the psychiatrist to treat them and allow them to lead a happy life.

The problem in this instance is sometimes a patient is prompted to recall a period of their childhood where the known or suspected trauma or abuse occurred it could result in psuedomemories. A psuedomemory is another name for false memory. When pseudomemory occurs, the patient believes it is real. Once awakened the pseudomemory is as vivid as a real memory.

Although in the plus column for hypnosis, many people have benefited from it by increasing their self-esteem, self-confidence and reducing the amount of stress that affects them. Hypnosis can really work especially in people who have already made the decision to change their life or change certain problems in their lives.

What it comes down to is this. Whether hypnosis really changed your life or you only deeply believe it has who really cares? The outcome is the only thing that really matters. Therefore, if you are ready to change your life or problems in your life it may benefit you to seek a licensed hypnotist or psychiatrist trained in hypnotherapy. One word of caution though, do not go to Vegas at a stage show for this treatment unless you want your spouse to have to housebreak you when you get home.
