Can a Long Distance Relationship Really Work?

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.

If you've ever had a long distance relationship you know that it isn't always easy. But then, no relationship is easy at all times. You have to want something to work in order for it to work. The main thing that can make a long distance relationship actually work is the prospect of it someday not being long distance. If there is no chance in the two of you finally being together, face to face, then what is the point, really? If you find yourself in a long distance relationship, whatever the reason may be (met online, military, etc.) here are some steps you can take to keep the romance alive and keep your relationship going.

It is important to talk often. Talk on the phone, text each other and take advantage of what the internet has to offer. Emailing is old now, the thing to do is Skype. With skyping you can talk face to face right on your computer. You are able to see each other in real time. Not as good as being right there with each other, but it's the next best thing. Don't just embrace technology though. Show how much you really care by going old fashioned. Write your significant other a love letter every once in a while.

Make plans to meet any time you can. Just because you are in a long distance relationship doesn't mean you never get to actually see each other. If your significant other is in the military you will get to see them on leave. If you are in a relationship with someone who lives in another state, is off to school or lives in another country you can still make plans to travel and see them. Obviously money may be a factor, but save up and it will be worth it. Plan a romantic visit. Spend time with each other, alone. Do the things both of you like to do. Share your thoughts and feelings while you have this special time together.

The last thing that you need to do to make your long distance relationship work it to have faith. If you communicate, trust and love you are sure to make it through this difficult time alone. Long distance relationships leave an open breading ground for mistrust and miscommunication, so you need to make sure that you are both always honest with each other and faithful to your relationship. Yes, a long distance relationship can really work if you both want it to!
