Why is lutein important?
Lutein (carotenoid) is a natural pigment and powerful antioxidant concentrated mainly in the retina of the eyes and the skin. It cannot be produced by the body and must be obtained from food. This compound is necessary for good vision and to protect skin from damage caused by free radicals. The main source of lutein for infants is breast milk or milk formulas fortified with lutein. Although lutein can be found in fruits and vegetables, the amount varies greatly. Even if you have balanced diet, there may not be sufficient lutein in your system.
How does lutein protect you?
When your eyes are bombarded by sunlight and artificial lighting, especially if you are glued to the computer every day, lutein helps protect the eyes from injury caused by harmful blue light. This especially applies to infants and young children, who are more vulnerable to blue-light damage than older children and adults.
Lutein protects eyes by absorbing blue light. Therefore, the higher the concentration of lutein in the retina, the better it can filter out blue light.
Supplementing your diet with lutein can also lower your risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), an eye condition in which the retina is damaged. AMD can lead to loss of central vision and eventual blindness.
Lutein also neutralizes the damaging effects of free radicals on skin, while increasing its hydration, elasticity and lipid content. By preventing free-radical damage, you can slow down the ageing process and give your skin a finer texture and firmness.
Lutein is known to reduce the risk of heart disease (atherosclerosis), cancer and other degenerative conditions.
So, protect your eyes and improve your body's defenses today by supplementing your diet with this powerful antioxidant!
