Can MRSA Be Counteracted Naturally?

Natural Health Alternatives May Offer Relief to Sufferers

Before we get to the resolution of the issue, let's discuss the problem. What is MRSA? Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a strain of Staphylococcus aureus that has become resistant to the antibiotic methicillin. In most cases, Staphylococcus are simply referred to as "staph", as will be from here on out in this article. One of the most common causes of skin infections in the US is indeed staph bacteria which are usually carried in the nose or on the skin of healthy people. Most infections are minor and can be treated without antibiotics, acne as an example. Staph bacteria are also capable, however, of producing serious infections such as blood stream infections or surgical wound infections. Even infections of the bones and joints are possible.

While the above definition of MRSA simply states its resistance to methicillin, MRSA is resistant to all antibiotics known as beta-lactams which include methicillin along with oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin. Many years and even decades of medicinal and agricultural antiobiotic use have now caused a widespread prevalence of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus or MRSA, and this superbug is now resistant to virtually every single type of antibiotic.

So what options do we have if our miracle antiobiotics are no longer a possible remedy? The first line of defense we can take is strengthening the immune system. A weakened immune system can allow infections to take a serious toll in the body. Virtually all drugs depress the immune system, so the best place to start is with a healthy diet. You can also add supplementation to your diet.

Olive Leaf Extract has been used effectively against a number of viruses, bacteria and fungi. In fact, a test published by the American Society for Microbiology found that elenol acid and calcium elenolate (the active components of Olive Leaf) inhibited the growth of every virus, bacteria, fungi and protozoa that they tested against (over 30!) With it's natural antiobiotic action, it is beneficial for bacterial inections even when antiobiotics are ineffective and is a non toxic way to strengthen the immune system.

Already have MRSA? Not sure? If you have what appears to be the beginning of a boil and you are not sure if it is a boil or merely a pimple, try this test. Soak a cotton ball with Hydrogen Peroxide and hold it to the blemish. If it is a pimple, it will turn white at the top, or form a head, and begin to heal within approximately fifteen minutes. Peroxide will do nothing to a boil, it will just continue to grow. If you find it is a boil, check out this Turmeric Recipe we found. (There is also a lot of good information about MRSA there, as well.) Get tested by a medical practioner if you think you may have MRSA or any other infection.

If it is determined that you do indeed have MRSA, there are still ways to find relief, and the studies have been done to show it.

The Royal Hampshire County Hospital conducted a randomised control trial of tea tree tropical oil preparations in comparison to the standard regime. The ability of the two regimes to clear MRSA colonisation from various sites on the body was measured within this trial. The tea tree oil, while slighty less effective in the nose and throat, was more effective in clearing skins sores from the infection. It was also shown to be more effective in clearing armpits and groins. Overall, it was favorable to modern pharmaceutical skin preparations. The results were published in the Journal of Hospital Infection.

Another possible defense would be the natural antibiotic Colloidal Silver. The use of colloidal silver has been shown to kill MRSA in lab tests and thus far, no resistant strains have developed. Comparing it to the six organisms that are killed by standard antibiotics, it is believed to kill around six hundred fifty different organisms. And even better yet, there are no side effects related to the use of Colloidal Silver. The use of some silver products have been tested against MRSA and showed a reduction in the number of cells to below detection within 5 hours, with others showing this type of reduction within 24 hours.

So despite the scare that mass media may be producing, there are steps you can take to help prevent the acquiring of such an infection. And if you do become infected, there are steps to take to battle the infection naturally.
