Tapeworms, roundworms and pinworms are the most common of the helminths. Helminths are worms that have many cells, while protozoas are worms that have one cell. Transmission of parasites normally occurs through consumption of contaminated food or water. However, it can result from other sources such as an being passed to an unborn child in the womb.

It is very common for a mother that has parasites to pass them to her unborn child. Parasites, such as, Toxoplasma gondii, can be passed from mother to child in the womb.

Parasites infection can cause serious illness if left untreated. Living within us, parasites feed upon our nutrients and food supply deprieving us of our needed sources. Aside from tissue and cell damage, parasites can cause kidney conditions, heart conditions, dehydration, malnutrition, and more, and in severe cases can lead to death.

Preventing Parasites

Parasites can be prevented by always washing hands before meals and after going to the bathroom, washing all fruit and cutting out any slits in the fruit, cooking meat thoroughly, wearing repellent to avoid insect bites, and de-worming your animals regularly. Regular cleansing can also be performed to help ensure a healthy immune system. However, if you are pregnant or nursing, have kidney or heart conditions, consult with your physician.

How Persons get Parasites

People who have increased risk of parasite infection are international travelers, exposed to contaminated water or food, increasing use of day care centers, household pets that pass the parasites, use of antibiotics and immunosuppressive drugs, and highly sexual.
