This story will be about Penelope, the Boston Terrier. She is about two and a half years old, chocolate and white and cute as a button. I have been wanting to breed her since she had turned one and entered her second cycle.
At first the big dilemma was trying to find a mate for my dear girl. Finally, I received a phone call. The guy had a seven year old male and decided to give it a try if we were interested. He was a good looking and well taken care of male so we gave it a shot. We visited the dog's owners home and let the two play. Penny was more than willing but the poor old dog just could not follow through. Can't say he didn't try. During that week we visited three different times but no luck. No puppies.
After that we waited for Penny's next cycle. Once again we tried the old boy but nothing. I don't know who was getting more frustrated. Us or the dogs.
Eventually, I ran into an old friend to find she had a young Boston Terrier. He was a beautiful black and brindle with the perfect marking. I told her my story and when she was done laughing she mentioned that they were planning the same for their dog. I could not believe my luck was finally changing.
Once again, Penny goes into heat. We wait the period of time and then I picked up Penny's new boyfriend and brought him home. He was now eleven months old. His family had checked with the vet who said if he is ready and willing it would be fine.
These two dogs have met before, played and tried even though she was not ready so I was sure there would be no problems.
I could never have been more wrong. The little guy tried and tried but could not hit the target. We kept him for two days and he never gave up. Penny would even lay down but there was no success. So there were no puppies.
Since then my friend, her family and dog have moved to Arizona. I knew I would have to once again hunt for another male for Penny. Am I not to see puppies from my precious girl? I know my husband would be relieved. He has a terrible fear of me keeping the pups.
After months I have now found a new friend for Penny. I even asked if he had experience. He has proven his male hood although it was not with the lady they had chosen.
So here is my story. Penny is finally beginning another cycle and I have a two year old male waiting and he has been successful before. So will I or won't I ever get puppies? I hope soon to be writing another article about this along with pictures.
I never expected something like this to become so complicated. Will we get puppies before Penelope is too old?
