Can You Prevent Baby Poop-Up-The-Back Syndrome?

Steve Sands
There are a lot of joys of being a new father. It's amazing to hold your newborn and think to yourself, "This baby is actually a part of me." It's also amazing to think how your newborn is dependent on you for just about everything. And on and on, there are just so many joys of being a new parent. But I gotta say, being pooped on is not one of them! Well, I will concede that it is kind of funny...the first time. But after the third or fourth time, it gets to be a hassle because you have to change and wash all of her clothes. As if there isn't enough of her laundry to do.

Recently, our baby has been pooping up the back. In some cases it's more like exploding up the back. Having talked to many of our friends, my wife and I have concluded that this is a common problem. Our first thought was, let's change diaper brands. So we tried Huggies, Luvs, Pampers, Target brand, and Wal-Mart (ok, we tried the Wal-Mart ones just because we were cheap, not because of the poop up the back issue). Anyway, all of them had the same problem. Although I will say the Pampers seemed to work the best at containing most of the poop.

So even though we haven't figured out a way to prevent the poop going up her back, here are some tips to lessen the amount of hassle:

Make sure the diaper is on tight. Don't cut off the circulation to the legs or anything, but make sure it's not moving around. When I first started changing her diaper I was afraid of putting it on tight. I figured out soon enough that a loose diaper leads to poop everywhere!

If the poop going up the back phenomenon continues to happen, it may be time to move up to the next size diaper. After all, the poop has to go somewhere. And if the diaper is too small, it's gonna find a way out.

Carry around a large zip lock bag when you are out and about. Trust me on this one. You'll thank me for it the next time your baby poops all over her clothes at the mall and you have no place to put them. (by the way, always carry around a change of clothes...for the same reason as above)

So if your baby has poop-up-the-back syndrome, take heart...most babies do too. But hopefully, these tips will make it a little easier to laugh about it. You have to admit, it is kind of cute when your baby makes the "I'm about to poop" face!
