Can Prison Change Your Life for the Better?

Sharon Morris
There are lots of people who go to jail or prison for the crimes they have committed. Some crimes are worse than others of course. But have you ever wondered if prison really changed these people's lives for the better? Well I have proof that it can. My husband went to prison when he was 26 years old for robbing a music store. He was on crack really bad and needed the money to buy his drugs so he broke into a music store and stole some of the instruments so he could sell them to provide his drug habit. He didn't hurt anyone. The store was closed for the night. He was so heavily addicted on crack that he would have sold his mother for some. Well that very same night, right before he broke in, someone else just got done robbing the place. He didn't see this person but this person saw him and went to the police and told on him. They did this so they wouldn't get in trouble for doing the exact same thing. Since this person told on him the police were looking for him and my husband found out. So my father-n-law talked my husband into turning himself in.

So a couple days later after my father-n-law nagged at him to turn himself in he finally did and off to jail he went. He spent one year in the county jail and then he was sent to prison for two more years. While in there he got drug counseling and even got his G.E.D. He was very good friends with the guards and they trusted him so much for his good behavior that they put him on honor dorm. This meant he was allowed to roam around outside more than the other prisoners. My husband even went out on the highway to help with clean up and they trusted him so much they left him there by himself to finish his work. He could have easily took off but he didn't. He decided it would be better to finish up his time and keep on the guards good sides. Prison scared him straight you might as well say. He was on his best behavior all the time and even had a job and made a little bit of money. He also seen some bad things happen in there that is enough to scare anyone straight. He saw people being killed and was almost hurt himself because of the constant riots in there. Prison is usually one man for himself but my husband had a lot of other prisoners that always had his back and never let anything happen to him.

He finally got out in 1998 and I met him two days later. Even thought he was a heavy drinker, as was I, I liked him right away. He told me stories that made the hair on my arms stand up. He hasn't done crack since he went to prison and is now the nicest guy you could ever meet. You would think prison would be enough to scare people out of the horrible things they have done but there are people who get out and go right back in no sooner than they are released. I could never make it in prison and would never do anything to land myself there. I know my husband credits his experience in prison for the man he is today and I am actually thankful for him going there. If not we might not have met and he might be dead by now from the drugs. He has also recently quit drinking and that is even better for our marriage. Do you know anyone who has been in prison and has changed their ways?

I'm not sure whether people change. I think my mother has and I'm willing to give her the second chance to prove herself

i dont really think that people change after being in prison.. because they treat them bad.. and sometimes that affects their lives.. and wanna treat other people like they treat them.. but i have a debate to do for my school.. and i have to agree on saying that prisons do change people... so help me out....

I do not think treating people worse than you would your dog, is ever gonna help. These are people with drug addictions. Mental illness, etc... there must be a more human way to deal with the woes of these people. America currently holds more people in prison than any other country. What does this say about our Legal system. My son got in trouble.. and the legal system threw him away. I was so naive had no idea that his attorney wouldn't have his best interest at heart. Attorney's are over worked and do not want to help those who can't afford to pay for their services;. Bye bye stupid.. just take the plea bargain. SMOKING POT SHOULD NOT BE A REASON TO GO TO PRISON~ GROWING WEED SHOULD NOT PUT FOLKS BEHIND BARS! Who are these people hurting? Not stealing to support their habit. they work, pay taxes. etc..

My life is better now than before i did my time, but my 7 years also left me seriously screwed up in other ways. I did 7 years in prison, 1 in a halfway house, 6 months on an ankle bracelet and 5 years on parole, a total of 13 and a half years in the system. I violated parole twice for drugs, but never returned to doing robberies. You and my poor wife could start a support group, dude sounds like me when I'm using. Personally I think prison makes people worse in a majority of cases, and when people do get better, it's because of their own will to change. Prison culture seems to bring out the worst in a majority of prisoners.

my man is a complete differant person after being locked up in pelican bay prison for 20 months, he was a thieving, drugging, cheating boyfriend. when he got busted and went to prison he did not claim any affiliations he stayed to himself and did his time. when he was locked we kept in touch by mail and I was leary about his sincerity but hes been home 2 months, hes working is clean and sobber. Im very proud of him.

Rosa, I don't know much about the prison terms. But my husband got a lucky break because he almost got 15 years but took a plea bargain and only got 3. I agree that it could also change a persons life for the worst. My husband saw so much stuff in their and the stories he has told me was enough to keep me out of there, lol. Well that and the fact that I would never do anything to go to prison anyway. Thank you, Rosa I will tell him you are proud. Once he wakes up that is. Yeah I guess we all have a lot to say huh? Lol!
