So, you ask, CAN I make a living writing articles online? That isn't an easy question to answer. I can only judge by my particular experience, which is probably not the norm in online writing. I don't do much for promotion, keyword research, optimization, tracking, or any of the usual things you hear about concerning writing articles. I basically just write. You see, I'm lazy. I don't like to do more than I have to. I run mostly on intuition. If something is working for me, I do more of it. Things that aren't working, I stop. I tend to spend more time and effort on the things that I enjoy.
This amounts to my overall income from articles being on the low side. I average about .50 cents per article per month in residual income. There are better writers who make a much higher average than I do. But let's say that the average is about $1 per article per month for the average online article writer. An American could probably live comfortably on $4000 per month. You would have to have a total of 4000 articles at the $1 per article/per month rate to achieve $4000 per month. This could easily be achieved in a little over a year if you can put out 10 articles a day.
While my figures are rather simplistic, I think the general idea is still valid. I think that Yes, it is possible to make a living writing articles online. It would take a lot of effort and time, and a whole lot of writing, but I believe it's achievable.
Of course, there's also the issue of coming up with thousands of article ideas. It might seem daunting at first glance. I tend to write things I know, and I sometimes have a hard time coming up with new ideas. But there are many content sites online. Articles can be rewritten for different sites, or expanded upon. There are a few sites where you can republish the same article, like Bukisa. One research session can result in multiple articles.
If you want to make a living writing online, it can be done, I have no doubts about that. My method, of writing in quantity and writing what I want, is probably not the best method, but it's what I prefer, and it's working for me.

Post a CommentA nice, honest perspective. Thanks!
Can you? Most definitely! I support a fam of 6 on it. I wouldn't dream of writing for $1/article though. Have you ever had to feed 4 kids?! hehe
Interesting...I may have to look into Demand Studios...
It depends on where you write. I do my bulk of writing on Demand Studios and they pay $15 an article. I make over $3,000 a month with them plus over $1,000 with AC, plus money from other areas. At over $50,000 a year just for my online stuff, that's about $20,000 a year more than the US national average. So, yes, it's easy to make money online if you write a lot and write for the right places. Plus, I live in Thailand, where $50,000 a year is the equivalent of $150,000 a year in the US - so I'm not complaining :-)
