Can You See the Butt for the Bruise?

Susan Slade
This past weekend we were visiting family up north. We arrived late Thursday, and they have a beautiful home.

On the Friday afternoon my husband Len, had been resting on the bed, and when he heard us come home from shopping, got up.

The stairway is wide, with beautifully polished wooden stairs. He got halfway down, holding on to the railing, and then slid the rest of the way.

The results were a bruise that goes from his waist, almost down to the back of his knee, cuts on both elbows, a swollen hand, wrist, and arm, and pain in one ankle. As he is on 3 blood thinners, Plavix, Warfarin, and Aspirin, it took me 48 hours to stop the bleeding on his elbows.

I phoned our doctor's office, and a G.P. phoned us back almost immediately. I was right, we took him off all the blood thinners, and he was to go to the doctor's office, on our return.

I wouldn't wish this on anyone. The first night we were changing the gauze, wrapping it with tape, tearing pillow cases around it, and then cutting up socks, and putting them on. In the morning the sheets were stained as if there had been a massacre.

The second night the sheets only had blood stains on them.

Sunday we managed to get him to Boston airport, and he had a wheelchair ride to the airplane. He was in so much pain on the journey back to Florida.

Monday, when we went to the doctor's office, she said that there was blood under the skin, where the bruise was raised. They have done blood work, and we are going back tomorrow. The bruising has got darker, and bigger, and now is coming around the front of his body too.

The reason why I am writing this is that Len used to do martial arts, and knows how to fall. If he hadn't have pulled his body forward, he would have caught his back, or head, and that could have been the end of him, or permanent damage.

Although he is in pain, and can't sit for any length of time, we are so thankful that it wasn't worse.

Please make sure that your stairs are safe, and that this doesn't happen to you or a loved one.
