Can Smart Energy Save the U.S. From a System Wide Collapse in 2012?

America May See Its Worst and Longest Lasting Black-out in 2012

Robert Lee Alford
As you know my last article on energy targeted the upcoming increase in sunspots widely predicted for 2012 and the havoc it could reap on our nation.

Today I offer a solution that may or may not be too late to initiate, one that might actually remedy the situation.

Smart Energy is the way of the future and it is the only way for this country to continue to grow and compete.

Our power grid system has been rusting away for decades as well as other parts of our infrastructure but unlike roots growing through drainage pipes causing clogs that can be localized and repaired fairly quickly without great danger to the populace, the power grid is somewhat connected to most of the states and parts of Canada, making repairs time consuming.

A total make over of the system is needed but a revamp of the existing system can probably do for a while and is quicker to complete.

This revamp would have to include some aspects of Smart Energy technology but not necessarily all of them to be effective in the possible calamities of 2012, when increased sun-spot activity is predicted to reap havoc on our present system, causing black outs that may cover most of the lower 48 and Canada, creating a huge security risk and crippling the economy.

Even if this does not occur, which I am not totally convinced it will, the possibility of black outs caused by our neglected and outdated system are reason enough to take notice.

But what is Smart Energy?

Well, it is many things but for the purpose of this article we can use this example: lets compare the present system to the old power systems in early home construction. When a fuse blew out, you had to track down the offending fuse and replace it. Well the electrical grid in most ways works like that, it is the way it was built and only for some minor changes it still operates the same way today.

When a power outage occurs, trucks are dispatched to the problem area (which could be quite a large area) and in general they would have to search for the problem manually. Not so with smart energy, you would have a much better idea of where a short occurred, via sensors that pinpoint the problem area and localize it for faster repair. Also with this system, when there is a need for more energy in one place and less in another the system can re-route more power where it will do the most good, in this way causing less over loads which means less black outs.

Smart energy also allows the customer to purchase his or her own energy from different energy sources, like hydraulic and solar to name a couple, giving them a role to play in the future of green energy.

Energy companies could get in on this too by purchasing from cheaper sources at will, saving their customers money and having a bigger voice in the process as well.

So what is the down side? Absolutely none, in fact it is something that we will have to do eventually any way and even if we choose to repair the system instead of replace it, we would employ hundreds of thousands and many thousands more in the related industries.

    Well written.

    Good info and agree with your other commentors. We will fix it AFTER there is a problem.

    We never seem to act on anything until after the crisis, do we?

    Good idea... Unlikely to be acted upon by those who just are doing too well with everything exactly the way it is. C'est la vie :-{
