Can a Sterling Silver Ring Be Resized?

GK
Resizing a ring can be done with most metals. Gold is popular for resizing. Along with the sterling silver can be resized to fit a person's finger. The process for resizing can be done at most jewelers.

When resizing a ring, a person first would want to take the sterling silver ring back to the place they purchased the ring to see if they are able to resize the ring. If they are not able to resize the ring ask for referrals as who in the area does resizing.

Understanding how a jeweler resizes a ring is important. The cost for resizing could cost the same or more then to replace the ring.

Silver will conduct heat fast. Gold when heating will heat at lower temperatures then silver. To resize gold is quick and easy due to the characteristics of gold. While silver heats quicker and hotter, resizing takes time, as water and other liquids are use to keep the heat down on the silver.

When soldering the ring the soldering torch needs to be very hot to melt the solder, while doing this the ring must be placed in cool water with changing the water once it gets warm. Gems will not handle the heat under these circumstances. This leaves one to two choices remove the gems or leave them in with careful work.

Some rings will be coated with rhodium. Rhodium will be sprayed on the ring to give a more shine chrome look to a ring. Rhodium also will help from tarnishing in a ring. Rings which have been coated with rhodium will cost more than the ring did to have resized.

When trying to resize a sterling silver plated ring forget it. Once the band is cut, a piece of metal will be placed in the area to enlarge the ring or taken out. Once this is done, the ring will then be soldered leaving marks of where the ring was soldered and different colors around the area due to the heat and different medals in the ring. To have a ring re-plated to cover the area is outrages in price.

When purchasing sterling silver rings make sure a person gets the correct size. When resizing needs to be done depending on how the rings were made in some cases resizing will cost more than the ring is worth.

I took a size 9 citrine ring that was set in 925 sterling silver to a reputable wholesale jeweler to be sized up to a 13. If I'm not mistaken, they mentioned a "laser" repair and sent it out. About 2 weeks later it was resized and the cost was $48. This was a gift for a friend's college graduation. I bought it from a close out for $30 guaranteed free of flaws and worth 3X that much. The citrine is 4 carats, clear and richly colored. The setting has two small diamonds on the shoulders. I would have spent this amount on a dinner and flowers for her. Instead, she has a lovely rememberance of how proud I am of her accomplishments and we got to have the experience of the whole sizing and gem evaluation process together. The total cost of the ring: $78. The experience: Priceless.
