Can You Take Children Snorkeling?

This Watersport Can Be Fun for the Whole Family

Marcia Frost

Snorkeling is a fun and easy summertime activity that's especially exciting when you are in a place where the water is clear and the fish are colorful. Most children can enjoy snorkeling as much as adults. You just need to consider the location they are doing it in; the child's age and size; and the equipment he will be using.

Location
If you are planning on taking your kids snorkeling you need to pick the right location where your children would be safe. Start them out someplace where you can snorkel right on the beach and the water isn't too deep. It's not that hard to find a spot like that on many of the Caribbean Islands, in Hawaii or even parts of the United States, such as Florida. If you are taking a tour, ask in advance if it's suitable for children to snorkel there.

Age & Size
Children love to play in the water so a desire to snorkel is pretty natural, but you are the parent so use your judgment as to whether or not you think your child is ready '" and you can't always base this on age. A five year old may be as tall as his 10 year old cousin so he can easily stand in the water. Or, your nine year old may be small for her age and she won't be able to snorkel in some areas.

Equipment
All your kids need before they hit the water is a snorkel, fins and a mask. It's important to make sure that you buy equipment that fits right. It won't be a fun experience for anyone if your child's mask is uncomfortable because it is too tight or if the fins keep falling off because they are too big. Make sure you try all the equipment on before you get to the beach and go over the basics of how to use each piece.

Considerations
When it comes to deciding whether or not your children can go snorkeling, remember that safety always comes first. If you have any doubt that your child isn't emotionally or physically ready to snorkel, either change the plans to an easier site or cancel the activity. While snorkeling, an adult should always be watching the children at all times regardless of their age and ability. Check before you get in the water that there is a first aid kit and a plan in case of emergency.
