Can There Be Another Testament of Jesus Christ?

Allen Butler
The Bible is divided into two main sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament contains the writings of the ancient Hebrews, documenting their history, the history of the nation of Israel and the fundamentals of the religion which today is known as Judaism. The New Testament is made up of the writings of the early Christians, documenting the life and teachings of Jesus Christ as well as the teachings of early Christian leaders.

According to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, these are not the only two Testaments. There is to them another Testament, another Testament of Jesus Christ to be exact. This Testament they believe is the Book of Mormon, which Mormons believe was discovered and translated by the founder of the LDS Church, Joseph Smith.

Before we can even ask if the Book of Mormon really is another Testament of Jesus Christ, we must first ask ourselves "Can there be another Testament of Jesus Christ?" The answer to this question hinges on the definition of the word Testament itself.

We often don't think much about what a Testament really is. There is the Old Testament and there is the New Testament, it seems pretty straight forward. But just how did they come to get those names? Is it like a last will and testament?

From Mormons I have spoken to, Testament in terms of "Another Testament of Jesus Christ" is generally defined as referring to testimony or statement of belief: something rather in keeping with most modern uses of the word. However, the Biblical Old and New Testaments have been so named for a very long time, and to understand their meaning we must look to older meanings of the word Testament.

If we look up Testament in the dictionary, we find its archaic meaning: "a covenant between God and the human race." A holy promise, a holy contract entered into between God and the people of the world.

In the Bible, there are two main covenants between God and Man. The first is the Mosaic Law, delivered unto Moses at Sinai. This covenant became the core of Hebrew religious belief and remains so to this day. Christians refer to this covenant, this testament, as the Old Testament between God and Man.

For Christians, the Old Testament of Moses and the prophets was replaced by the New Testament, the Testament of Jesus Christ. This covenant is best defined in the Gospel of John, Chapter 3 verse 16 (Quoting from the King James Version):

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

This is the core of Christianity. Jesus came to Earth to die for everyone in the world, and whoever believes in Jesus and his sacrifice made for us shall not be condemned but shall live eternally in Heaven. This is the Testament of Jesus Christ.

Can there be another Testament of Jesus Christ? The answer is clearly no. The Covenant of Jesus is a covenant made with all the peoples of the world, not to any group in particular. There is not one covenant made in Palestine and another made in the Americas: Jesus Christ made the Covenant, Jesus Christ is the Covenant, for He is the sacrifice that pays for the salvation of all mankind.

Seeing as the Bible is clear in that there is only one Covenant of Jesus, and there is not even need for Him to make another Testament (for His blood is enough for the sins of all mankind), we can only say that there is no other Testament of Jesus Christ than that described in the New Testament.

It is not complicated. Any person or organization who claims you need to do anything, other than believe in Jesus, that he is the messiah who died for our sins in order to have everlasting life, would obviously have to "create" and publish their own version of the testament of Jesus Christ. They did exactly that. Bottom line? They either do not understand or believe the bible. And, I hope they don't claim to believe part of it and not the rest. We're talking everlasting life folks. The bible is either 100% real, or nothing in it can be trustworthy. I choose to believe it 100%, otherwise how could one be sure which parts not to believe? HMMM

Galatians 1:8 "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed."

Since he has so well described how there can be no 'other testament' by definition, asking him to read something that does not exist before commenting would be ignorance supreme. Keep in mind that he wasn't claiming to have read the book or to know anything about it; knee jerk espousal of denial of the truth is often an indicator of falsehoods.

Clearly you have not read The Book of Mormon. So how then can you make such a claim on something you know nothing about?
