I fear the new Stooges film will fall flat compared to the original episodes. I just don't see how MGM can improve on the slapstick comedy of the original Moe, Larry, and Curly. Now, Shemp and Joe are another story. The Stooges were never able to replace Curly, the favorite Stooge of most fans. Shemp was a poor substitute, but the two different Joes were even worse.
Jim Carrey will have some mighty big shoes to fill playing the part of Superstooge, Curly, whose God given talent had appeal for the young and the old. Even Michael Jackson, in the foreword of Curley , an autobiography written by Curly's niece, Joan Howard Maurer (Moe's daughter), says that Curly was his favorite Stooge. Jackson says that Curly was a genius of comedy. He loved Curly's silly antics, noises, and slapstick action. As a child, Michael Jackson imitated Curly every chance he got.
Do you know that Curly was the youngest of the five Howard (Horwitz) boys but by far, the most popular? His real name is Jerome Lester Howard. His mother prayed for a girl after giving birth to four sons, but she got Curly instead. Although he wasn't the baby his mother wanted, he was just what the world needed - a magical, funny man who brightened the spirits of the young and old across America.
The Three Stooges started performing for MGM in 1933, in features like Turn Back the Clock, Meet the Baron, Dancing Lady, and Nertsery Rhymes to name a few. They were instant hits and Moe, Larry, and Curly were on their way to becoming the most famous comedians of all time. The rest is history.
Once again, MGM plans to bring the Three Stooges back to the present. How fans will react is difficult to say. I wonder if those fond memories of a childhood filled with Moe, Larry, and Curly will be willing to accept three new stooges. The new film, The Three Stooges might just be 'a victim of soicumstance"!

Post a CommentI love to watch the Stooges, haven't seen the reruns in a while.
No way will or does it compete. Thos three were masters!
In 1968 I was visiting LA with my cousin to view colleges to attend. My cousin was a cab driver to support himself while going to school. He got to know Larry Fine and Moe Howard thru the taxi business and became friendly with both. Larry who died in early 1975,had a medical problem 10 years earlier that prevented driving if I remember. Larry LOVED cars! Moe was quite a stamp collector and I met his grandson who shared the hobby. Years later when I was a graduate student at UMASS/Amherst I tried to get Moe to speak(circa 1974). Family illness prevented it. Unfortunately both Larry and Moe died in 1975.
Thanks for this review. I remember the Three Stooges and the memories just were relived. We have to see if it is as good. I think Jim Carey could do the job. He has great talent.
Good job done here.
