Can the Titan Defense Carry the Team

The Tennessee Titans proved once again today that they have one of the best defenses in the NFL. At times during their game against San Diego this defense look invincible. They have some of the best defenders in football including Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vandenbosh. Despite the fact that they are ranked in the top ten in almost every defensive category, the Titans are 7-6 and in a fight to make the playoffs. Can this defense carry the Titans into the playoffs? Here are a few thoughts on the subject.

What makes this defense so good is their front four. The Titans have one of the best front fours in all of football. They have arguably the best single defensive player in football in Albert Haynesworth. Say what you want about 'Big Albert' but his presence up front requires two or three guys to stop. His presence also make other players on the front line better. Both Kyle Vandenbosh and Antwan Odom have benefited from Alberts play. They get one-on-one matchups and because of their speed often get to the quarterback. They have put a lot of pressure on the quarterback and have injured a number of quarterbacks this season. This constant pressure makes it tough for quarterbacks as they have to throw quickly.

As great as the Tennessee defensive has been this year, the offensive has had some tough times. At times they've looked good, at times they've looked pretty bad. For all of his talent, Vince Young is obviously a quarterback that is still growing. At times he looks very good, such as his game against the Saints this year. At other times he makes decisions that make you scratch your head. In time he will probably be a great quarterback. The Titans will have to rely heavily on their running game. The offensive has had some good moments, but overall has struggled to put up a lot of points this year.

As great as their defense is, the Titan defense can only carry it so far. Because they rely so heavily on rushing the passer and making plays with their speed up front, late in the game they are often tired. The rely on the offense to make plays and run the ball to keep them off the field. If Tennessee wants to be a playoff team this year, they must continue to improve offensively. Yes they have shown sings of improvement, but this team needs to score more. They need to give this defense a little more cushion and more of a reason to play hard the entire game.

I expect the Titans defense to continue to make plays as the season draws to an end. The will continue to get after the quarterback and continue to make life difficult for opposing running games. It will be up to Vince Young and the offense however to make enough plays to get this team into the post season. They will have to make enough some plays and take a little pressure off of this great defense.
