Can Too Much Calcium Cause Fibromyalgia?

Jolynne M Hudnell
Some of the symptoms of calcium overdose are the same as some symptoms of fibromyalgia. This makes me wonder, can too much calcium cause fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a debilitating syndrome that includes chronic pain in muscles, soft tissues and joints, nerve problems, extreme fatigue and often bowel problems. Some symptoms of calcium overdose include constipation, fatigue and drowsiness, muscle and joint pains and nerve problems. This list sounds similar to many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

There has been an increase in diagnoses of fibromyalgia, but only in part because doctors are taking the existence of this syndrome more seriously. There is currently no known cause of fibromyalgia. It just seems more than coincidental to me, and I'm just theorizing, that fibromyalgia cases seemed to increase with an increase in the use of calcium supplements. Calcium supplement use has increased in the hopes to prevent osteoporosis, especially in women. More women than men appear to develop fibromyalgia. It makes me wonder if too much calcium can cause fibromyalgia.

Calcium plays a role in nerve impulses. Calcium is necessary for proper nerve functioning. However, calcium overdose can cause trouble with nerves. Nerve impulses register nearly everything in the body, including sensitivity to pain, alertness and even sleep patterns. What if too much calcium affects the nerves in a way to cause fibromyalgia? What if fibromyalgia is just another form of calcium overdose?

There is a higher risk of calcium overdose with supplements over natural foods. The calcium in supplements is not absorbed by the body in the same way as when calcium is obtained through the foods we eat. Overdose can occur with too high of doses or by taking more calcium than needed on a consistent basis.

There is plenty of evidence mentioned here for researchers to take a serious look to see if there is a link between use of calcium supplements and fibromyalgia. Perhaps there are currently studies being performed that look into this possible link. Otherwise, there needs to be some type of research to see if too much calcium causes fibromyalgia.
