Can You Trust GPS Systems These Days?

How Effective is Having a GPS System on Your Phone or in Your Car?

Many people have changed how they travel these days, while maps are still used, just not in the same way as they used to be. Today there is GPS systems or e-maps, which gives turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Of course there are always the stories of where the GPS system took you and you weren't exactly where you wanted to be or it took you on the longer route. Many of the GPS systems units today will try to guide you around traffic jams, or accidents, which is why sometimes you could end up taking the long route.

Of course as anyone who has used Map Quest, Yahoo maps, or Google maps, can tell you not all the destinations are current. It is always best to plot out your course ahead of time, so you can tell if the GPS system is taking you the shortest route to your destination. GPS systems are usually very accurate; it also depends on whether you are using a Tom-tom, Garmin, or your cell phone. For example, some GPS systems will give voice commands to your destinations leaving your hands free to drive and not having to deal with handling a map for directions. Voice GPS systems are becoming the most common because of the added safety.

GPS systems on cell phones vary by dependability, some cell phones are only capable of basic GPS systems and they do not offer voice commands. It is also these types of GPS systems that will often lead to a wrong destination or just get you to the general area. Cell phone carriers can make a difference also; most major carriers provide very dependable GPS software on their phones. Many GPS systems are now starting to recommend locations such as restaurants and movie theaters in the local area, as well as gas stations.

While GPS systems are not perfect in your car or on your cell phone, they can be extremely accurate. Many GPS systems are really a "get what you pay for item", which is why it is always best to double-check the most current map. As many people have learned e-maps are not always the best option and sometimes the local gas station attendant will still be needed to guide you on your way. Although with technology and GPS systems combining their efforts, the day may come of not ever needing to stop and ask for directions again.
