Can Two-Way Radios Be Used on a Cruise Ship?

Walkie Talkies for Your Vacation

Drew Nelson
Two way radios are used in a variety of environments including cruise ships. Walkie Talkie two way radios have become very popular for family excisions. They are relatively inexpensive and once set up are free to use (that is there is no recurring monthly charge like there is with cell phones). They are perfect for communication between passengers on a cruise ship.

Function

Two way radios send and receiving voice, sound and data signals. More than two walkie talkies can be used if they are set to the same channel. For a family of four for example, each person could have a unit and could communicate with each other member of the family as long as the others had their units turned on.

Types

There are long range and short range two way radios. The long range is high frequency and the short range is low frequency.

Geography

Because they travel in a straight line low frequency and ultra high frequency signals are not very useful where the terrain is rough or mountainous. This would not apply to communications on a cruise ship but might apply at ports of call.

Features

High frequency two way radios work well in remote locations where other devices such as cell phones cannot be used. These radios can transmit sound and voice signals very clearly for very long distances, they can even transmit digital data from one computer to another.

Considerations

Very High Frequency signals are best because of better penetrating powers, usefulness in rough and remote mountainous terrain and can travel longer distances. A low frequency walkie talkie would work fine on a cruise ship, however for other family excisions low frequency may not be very useful. It might be wise to invest in very high frequency walkie talkies so they can be of use at other times, such as an extreme camping and/or hiking trip.
