Can Video Games Cause Mental Problems?

It Has Been Proven that Certain Video Games Can Cause Mental Problems in Younger People

Jason Freeden
Doctors can see why certain teens get into massive amounts of trouble and the reason isn't always their lifestyle or the television, but another problem that relates to both in a way. Video games can cause mental issues in teens as they grow up and the problem is growing rapidly, not only do we see teens committing crimes that not only hurt others but also hurt themselves, but we see a growing population of juvee patients and that's not a good sign at all. The main question here is, why do video games cause abusiveness and problems amongst other teens that play them? Well the answer is simple, teens get so into the game that they lose interest in other things while they are concentrating on the violent tactics that the characters perform in the games they are playing. If doctors can prove that video games are a huge problem, then esrb rating would have to go up and more "proofing" would have to be done in retail stores around the USA.

A few of the problems that occur in violent video games, note that I said violent video games, as this is the main genre that causes these problems. While the majority of mental issues that occur in young teens is abusiveness, there is also a growing issue that has to do with struggling in school and not being social with other kids your age. While there are many other things that can cause these problems including television and bumming around inside for no apparant reason, we see video games topping the list. Not only do teens not go out and enjoy life, but they also eat a lot more which can make them obese, which can provide larger problems down the road when they get older. So why are video games so addiciting? Well the fact is that anti social teens just have no self esteem and they feel that if they are good at video games, then they are good at something, which is something positive in its own way, but it just isn't healthy to sit around for hours. The Nintendo Wii, which uses a nun chuk style controller, is trying to get kids in shape, but providing them games that actually require them to move around and use their muscles and such. This concept was created by Nintendo and the Wii is now the most popular console gaming system on the market. Hopefully this will help out the problems that most video games cause.

Parents complain all the time about their children losing interest in other things, especially their friends and they blame it all on video games, so at least this is a start to figuring out the overall problem at least. Game developers can't stop the production of violent video games because there are adults that have high interests in the games so they only thing retail stores really need to do is proof everyone that looks underage and maybe increase the esrb rating of M related games to 18 + perhaps.

The problem does not lie in the videogames themselves. They are marketed to the age group for which the rating suggests. The REAL problem lies within parenting skills and discretion. Real life example: I was in Gamestop, and a mother was going to get Red Dead Redemption for her son who i would venture maybe middle school age, and the clerk said it might not be a good idea to get this for her son. She said there were probably worse games out there, and he simply replied, "No. No, this is probably one of the top ones." She just shrugged and didnt reply, and still got the game for her son. THIS is the problem, when young, impressionable kids are allowed to see things that are deemed okay only for people who are fully mentally developed.

@Arkylie: I love your screenname by the way...but I wholeheartedly agree with you. If someone is mentally unstable from the get go, no media be it books, games, tv, movies, or music is going to cause them to get any worse than they would be if they hadn't partaken of it.

Your article is rife with unqualified generalizations, and what you try to state as fact has no proof to back it up. I cry "foul!" Read "Everything Bad Is Good for You" for info on how video games are IMPROVING mental health. Games are also getting ever more social (e.g., zombie killing fun in Left 4 Dead 2 lets you cooperate with friends both in person and online). There seems to be a lot you haven't considered.

NO i don't think video games cause violence in children i have two boys and they play games all the time and they haven't had not one violent outburst. if you have a child(ren0 that's living in a household where he/she is surrounded by violence then that's when you have a problem with that child. Video games don't cause violence people cause violence it is what it is!

How can you put "it has been proven" in the title of your article, and yet say "if doctors can prove it" later? This means it has not been proven! Furthermore, I am sick and tired of people blaming television, video games, etc. for the problems of their kids! TV and games are not the problems; it is inattentive parents who do not discipline their kids! They try to blame everything but themselves! They need to wake up and realize it is their fault for not being a "Good Parent!"

Question: Do video games cause "mental problems"?

    Answer: No.

Second answer: And screw you and the retarded horse you rode in on for suggesting they do.

Wow, Where's the facts backing these enormously generalized statements up? You people believe this garbage? Video games cause anti-social disorders and obesity. Just like all black people crave fried chicken. And all Muslims are violent. If your going to state an issue as "fact" at least give some supporting evidence other than your own bias.
