Can Yoga Replace Weight Training

Beth Lytle
According to CNN Diet and Fitness Expert, Dr. Melina Jampolis, muscle loss begins for individuals when they reach their early 30s. After the age of 30, muscle loss typically reduces by 3 percent per year. Depending on the age of the individual, muscle loss may not be anything to worry about, however, the type of Yoga, which should be practiced is called power yoga. Power yoga should be practiced for two hours a day twice a week in order for it to be effective and for older individuals, it is important not to replace weight training with yoga, but to incorporate both into your weekly workout routine.

There is another type of yoga that incorporates weights into the routine that may be able to help individuals save time. This type of yoga is called the Baptiste Method. This yoga practices utilizes 1, 3 and 5 pound weights and not only helps to tone and strengthen the body overall, but also helps with balance. This form of yoga is highly recommended for individuals who are 65 and older.

Power yoga classes will differ depending on the teacher. It will, however, be most appealing to people who are already in good shape and who enjoy exercising. Chanting and meditation is also an important part of power yoga. This makes the yoga routine both relaxing and a good workout.

Weight training can be very effective in helping in the prevention of bone loss. In a sense, yoga routines are a type of strength training, because you are lifting your own body weight. Strength or weight training focuses more on toning and body shape (sometimes losing weight), but yoga focuses more on mind, body and spirit. Some individuals practicing yoga have been able to improve muscle size, definition and can help to tone.
