Canada Day Charity Road Race in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

Michael Thompson
Why participate in the Moose Jawg Charity Road Race on July 1, Canada Day, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan? Well, it's hard to find cool temperatures for running in mid-summer, and in Moose Jaw, the average temperature at that time of year is about 60 degrees early in the morning, and 78 degrees in mid-afternoon. So, cool temps are a reason for running in the Moose Jawg Charity Road Race, either the 5K or the 10K.

But the main reason is the cool race T-shirt you'll get. Just consider: Who wouldn't want a shirt from the Moose Jawg in Moose Jaw. Talk about a conversation piece!

If you're a United States citizen and you've heard of Moose Jaw, it was probably while you were watching a hockey telecast: "Clark Gillies hails from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan." Or Chico Resch or Reed Low or Mike Blaisdell, or way back in the old days, the legendary Emile "The Cat" Francis. And while watching the telecast, the mention of Moose Jaw sort of caused your jaw to drop: There's really a place in Canada called Moose Jaw?

Yes there is. And there are plenty of jokes. But to say that Jay Leno, he of the Dudley Dooright jaw, once played Moose Jaw, that is not a joke. It's true.

Comic impersonator Rich Little got a laugh saying, "Moose Jaw is so small, they don't have
weather there." The citizenry of 36,000 was highly offended. Gary Hyland, Moose Jaw's designated poet laureate, woofed in return, "People with names like Rich Little shouldn't make jokes about the size of anything."

The most popular explanation for why Moose Jaw is named Moose Jaw is that this is an English pronunciation of the name given by the Cree tribe, "moscatstani-sipy," meaning "river of warm breezes." Indeed, Moose Jaw is located in a scenic, rolling hills area of southeastern Saskatchewan.

Funds from the Moose Jawg Charity Road Race go to the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, which supports Moose Jaw Union Hospital. Organizers report that they have raised more than $30,000 during the past eight years. The $45 entry fee covers not only that cool T-shirt, but a post-race breakfast and prize drawing tickets. Kids can enter a $5 Runt Run.

Not a bad deal. The T-shirt alone would be worth it!
