Here are a few tips that you can use to make your canary's home into a luxurious den.
1. The cage is first and foremost the most important purchase you will make for your canary. It will literally be their home for the rest of their lives so you want to make sure you go for broke and get as close to the top of the line as you can afford.
Try picking cages that are either chrome or brass. Chrome or brass cages are extremely easy to clean and usually have their bars close enough that the canary cannot escape. Don't choose a cage that has paint, as your canary may eat away at the paint and become ill. Also, never pick a wooden or bamboo cage. These cages hold odors, pests, mites and other things that are extremely detrimental to your canary's health. They are also very difficult to disinfect.
2. Canaries, like all birds, feel more secure the higher they are. When determining where to put their cage, it's a good idea to put them as high as possible with as much open space as possible. Most owners will hang the cage from the ceiling, hang it from a wall attachment or hang the cage from a floor stand. Either way, make sure the feeding and watering containers are in your reach so you can keep your canary watered and fed.
3. The perches (these are the bars inside the cage that the canaries stand on) should be wooden and of a varying size so the bird can change their foot position constantly. When a canary is in the wild, they are usually perched on different size branches, twigs, tree tops or whatever else they can land on. By varying the size of its perch, this replicates the amount of foot pressure they use just like in the wild and helps exercise their grips.
If you want to make your perch more effective and canary friendly, use a small saw to cut grooves into the perch bar. This will allow different sections of the bottom of their feet to be exposed to air.
These are just a few tips you can use to make your canary's home a healthy habitat.
