The most surprising results came over the last two days, as sci-fi programs got decidedly mixed outcomes. Although V was able to skate by for a second season, ABC canceled its other would-be stand in for Lost, Flashforward. Meanwhile, the show that looked set to overtake Lost years ago, Heroes, was let go after three straight despised seasons.
But the surprise entry among the canceled TV shows is one of the longest running shows in history. Absolutely no one expected Law & Order to be taken away, after 20 seasons that left it tied with Gunsmoke's prime-time record. However, low ratings finally made NBC ask for Law & Order's badge, gun and bar license, with the final episode airing May 24.
The Law & Order franchise all but ran NBC in the 90's, but with the original joining the canceled TV shows of this year, only one current Law & Order branch is left on NBC. Yet Dick Wolf has one more spinoff left in him, as Law & Order: Los Angeles will premiere in the fall. Meanwhile, the longest running Law & Order left, SVU, will remain on NBC.
The other canceled TV shows for 2010 don't quite have Law & Order's track record. NBC also canceled freshman medical shows Mercy and Trama, while ABC let Scrubs go after borrowing it for one year, and then shut down Better Off Ted. Other programs like Medium, Cold Case and Numb3rs are still on the bubble, while programs like V, Chuck and Parenthood have already survived the bubble.
Some shows already canceled themselves to provide a proper goodbye, like Lost and 24. Others will have to leave their season-ending cliffhangers unresolved, like Flashforward. And although Law & Order made TV history, it filmed its final episode well before they knew it was the end.
The rest of the 2010 canceled TV shows will be revealed soon enough, since the fall schedule announcements are set for next week.

Post a CommentParty Down belonged on a channel that'd take the time with it like an FX. Paired with "Always Sunny" it would of killed! Even HBO would of given it time to develop...
It's not the only shows canceled before their time this year:

I agree Rhonda! We might as well just watch movies and no TV... at least then you won't be left out to dry! These big wigs who cancel our shows, suck!
I give up! I cant count the tv shows that I get into watching and they end up cancelling them or not renewing them. Just about all the shows I've watched are canned. Makes me not want to start watching any new shows for fear I'll be left hanging...again. Some dont even get a chance & then some come on all at the same time one night and nothing on another night. This is ridiculous!
Good shows get cancelled, and junk like reality shows stay on the air. Actually I think the network heads should get the axe. They don't give new shows time to find an audience, they axe good shows because they claim it is too costly to make them, and they leave us with the junk. All I know that everything my family and I watched on the networks is going, so I guess that means I'll be going to.
DVR is killing Television. I can attest, I watch all of them with the use of my DVR. They are all great shows and they are being cancelled. Flashforward was one of my top three along with 24 and Lost. What am I going to do now?
Loved FlashForward but that layoff killed it for me. What the hell were they thinking with that?! I couldn't wait for each week then they killed the momentum with that crap. Serves them right. Love the show but hopefully they learn you don't take a 10 week hiatus while the iron's hot.
They just dont get it... I, along with most of you, cant believe that abc would cancel flashforward, and nbc cancel trauma(which ironically are the only good shows on either network). Nowadays, the empty, mindless reality show is king, but lets borrow an idea . How about you let US decide(or at least get a vote) of which shows to keep or vote out of our big brother houses? That would make too much sense. Cable shows are FAR better, and have been for years now. If the execs want us to stay with shows, borrow the formats from shows like The Wire, and Sons of Anarchy, like a great story, writing, character acting, etc., and make us WANT to watch. Seriously, if we're paying $100 a month for your cable, shouldnt we get a say?
can'y believe that you are canceling Trama! you have already tried V once and it didn't last then ,what makes you think it will go over now? as far as I am concerned TV execs have no real idea what people want.
i cannot belive law and order is finishing likethis! After it makes history they dont even get the chance to go out with a bang!! All the crappy shows that we are left with and you decide to take off flashforward, mercy and Trama, at least these shows were worth watching unlike 'V' which i think is a bunch of crap..... in this day and age you cant go by ratings like you used to as everyone has dvr's and watch it later.... I hope they leave what is left on tv otherwises it wont be worth watching anymore.....
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO Law and Order is gone that is such a great show o well I guess here is still House if that was cancelled there may have been a riot
