Cancelled TV:Studio 60

Some television shows don't seem to really get a chance. One such show was Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. This magnificent show got off to a good start in the ratings scale, but then dropped mid-season. By the end of the season, numbers had rebounded, but not enough to please the network. In spite of a well-known cast, strong fan base and engaging content, Studio 60 did not survive.

Studio 60 went behind the scenes on an SNL like comedy sketch show. Though classified as drama, this show could definitely get you laughing out loud. The combined efforts of stars Matthew Perry as a head writer and Brad Whitford as executive producer were beyond expectation when it comes to entertainment. These two created a chemistry that made a spectacular base for the show. They were characters that you could truly relate to. The supporting cast was filled with similarly recognizable and talented actors, including Steven Weber, Amanda Peet, and Sarah Paulson. They created a group that you actually cared about. You were actually concerned with the outcome of their lives.

The dialogue of the show was fast-paced, witty and intelligent. It followed the Sorkinesque traits that were shown in The West Wing and Sports Night. Conversations were filled with banter and cleverness that go beyond normal network tv. Along with the comedy this created, the show managed to still provide drama engaging enough to bring tears to your eyes. In one of the best hours of television I've ever witnessed, the Christmas episode brought an amazing experience. Musicians were brought in from hurricane ravaged New Orleans to perform for the show. Their rendition of "O Holy Night" was breathtaking. Not many shows have the wisdom to bring that kind of spirit.

We mourn the loss of a show that was cancelled because it was too smart for network television. Studio 60 could have created an entertainment legacy given the chance to endure. Unfortunately fans are left with only one season to savor over and over. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip can be marked down as another regrettable cancelling decision by a big network.
