Cancer Prevention: It's All in the Foods You Eat

Wendy Rahilly
Experts believe that cancer prevention starts with healthy eating. Studies conducted at the American Institute for Cancer Research indicates that nearly half of all cases of cancer are due to the foods that people eat. This supports previous research which found connections between the way a person eats and whether or not they eventually get certain forms of cancer. Furthermore, researchers also believe diets that involve regularly eating foods that are high in fat and calories increase the likelihood for cancer. On the other hand, people who eat a lot of vegetables and fruits, along with whole grains, not only benefit from those foods but also increase cancer prevention. In fact, researchers say eating these foods offers instant benefits in the short term, with excellent long term rewards as well.

The reason that fatty foods contribute to the formation of cancer in the human body has to do to the effect the have on the cells. Fat cells ten to split rapidly. This leads to an increased production of free radicals, which break the cell down and ruin its DNA make up. Once this happens, mutations can take place. This can cause cancer cells to form. Research at Harvard's School of Public Health suggest that it's not the amount of fat in a person's diet that matters, but rather the particular type of fat a person is regularly consuming. That's why it's recommended for cancer prevention, that people eliminate the so called bad fats, also known as saturated and trans fats, from their diet.

In order to eliminate the bad fats, limit your intake of red meats. It's recommended that you consume no more than 5 ounces each day. Less is even better. Any meat that you eat should be either broiled baked or poached. This is a healthier way of preparing it rather than charbroiling or frying the meat. Try to eat more turkey and chicken instead of pork and beef, which can lead to colorectal cancer. The American Institute of Cancer Research recommends eating plenty of whole grains, beans, and fruits and vegetables as a type of cancer prevention.

To get the right amount of fruits and vegetables, eat about five servings each day. Plant based foods offer cancer prevention because they consist of phytochemicals, which are nutrients that keep the cells healthy and prevent them from becoming cancerous. Foods that are rich in fiber such as oat, nuts, and barley also offer protection against cancer. That's because helps the body eliminate cancer causing agents from the body.
