CANCER-STRICKEN PARENTS;

How to Help Children Cope

RONYAE
The children had never imagined their parents getting sick. After all, neither one of the parents had ever gotten the common cold.

But now, their father had been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.

Although the father 's Cancer was diagnosed early and was able to receive preventive medicine, which would prove to be effective since the cancer was detected in its early stages, the children still had a certain fear of losing him.

It's a most terrifying thought to a child of losing a parent. Just the thought of knowing that they are no longer there for them, makes them so scared and petrified of being 'alone, without and even abandoned'. We all know about the bonds children and parents have, regardless of anything; And for a child to feel as if their only form of security is going away, it puts them in a state of an overwhelming loss.

It's has been stated that it's best to be honest with the children about the entire situation; Don't give them false hopes. Tell them what procedures will be taken, and why. They must be able to not only understand what is happening, but they must be able to relate to the fact of why it's happening. I know it's hard to put certain issues into words, or to even have to bring such heavy issues to your child; We, as parents hate to bring sadness into our children's lives, but life is filled with both: Happiness and sadness, so we must address both.

And, don't be afraid to talk about it. This is something that will affect the entire family, and the entire family must be in one accord when dealing with it. There are many support groups for family members of Cancer-stricken people. This will also serve helpful in helping the children to cope.

Another good way of helping the children to cope with the situation of having Cancer-stricken parents, is to educate them about the type of cancer that parent has. This will not only give them true facts of what it is, but knowing about it, helps them to understand what their parent is going through. Believe it or not, knowing about things make you feel a bit superior over the situation at hand. Because one tends to feel that at least they know all the details needed to conquer whatever it is, that seems as a threat.

The main partner-tool needed to help children to cope with Cancer-stricken parents is not living helpless to the situation. Although we all know things will be different, and emotions are going to arise, but that doesn't mean that the spirit of the family has to be demolished as well. How would you help your child to cope with Cancer?
