Richard Stephenson founded Cancer Treatment Centers of America in 1988, after he lost his mom to cancer. His personal vow to make sure other cancer patients have the best treatment available has resulted in four hospitals around the United States that focus on this disease.

The founding hospital is Midwestern Regional Medical Center and it is located in Zion, Illinois. Eastern Regional Medical Center, which is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, opened its doors in 2005 as the second one. Cancer Hospital in Southwest located in Tulsa, Oklahoma was the third hospital with the Cancer Treatment Centers of America affiliation. In 2008, a fourth hospital opened it doors Western Regional Medical Center in Goodyear, Arizona. A fifth hospital is planned in the Newnan Georgia area.

The Cancer Treatment Centers of America also operate an oncology outpatient clinic in Renton, Washington. This center is called the Seattle Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center.
