Cancun Mexico- a Survival Guide

Tips for a Better Travel Experience

Heidi Adams
If you plan to travel to Cancun in the near future, these are some tips I have developed from my own personal experience. This will hopefully better prepare you for knowing what to expect if you have not traveled to Mexico before. This will surely lessen your worries

1. Be sure you obtain a passport and make a photcopy to keep in a seperate area from your original. (Be aware that as of Dec. 31st, 2006 you will be required a passport to travel to Canada and Mexico by airplane).

2. Pack your bags lightly. The best way to travel in my opinion. The customs line in the airport will randomly select bags to check for security purposes. They will pull everything out of your bag. This can be very time consuming and who needs clothes in Cancun?

3. You will be given an important document on the plane you enter the country on. Be sure to keep it in your passport. Customs will check this on your way in and out of the country. - A girl in front of us in line did not realize the importance of the document and threw it away!!! She had to go all of the way back to another part of the airport to get one. Try explaining that to someone who speaks very little English.

4. Keep in mind that in Cancun, the locals are not very well mannered and will cut in line with little regard to you at a buffett or restuarant.

5. Tip before you get a table. This will ensure you will be served in a timely manner.

6. Don't pack anything of value. It may end up missing.

7. Do plan a day to go see the Temples/Pyramids. Would you go to Egypt without seeing the Pyramids? I didn't think so.

8. Do snorkel in a private area so you will not be bombarded and kicked by other swimmers.

9. Do pack sunscreen regardless of if you are beautifully tanned. For your own safety.

10. Do wake up early and see the sun come up on the beach.
