According to the City of Philadelphia's website, the Courts of Common Pleas are Pennsylvania's courts of general trial jurisdiction. They have existed since the colonial charter of Pennsylvania, and are incorporated in the Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776. The Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County presently consists of ninety (93) judges who are currently assigned as follows: Trial Division, 67; Family Court Division, 20; and Orphans' Court Division, 3.
The Court of Common Pleas is supervised by a President Judge who is elected for a five year term by the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas.
Joyce, has dedicated her life and career to fighting for justice and equality against racism, oppression and sexism in all of its manifestations.
With over 20 years, as an Assistant Defender Trial Attorney for the Defender Association of Philadelphia, she has tried hundreds of cases to verdict, bench trials and jury trials, in both the Philadelphia County State Court, the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania, and in the Third Circuit Federal Courts for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She has been an adjunct professor, teaching trial skills to law students, at Temple University Beasley School of Law for ten years. Over these years, she has developed and earned a reputation for being a staunch, dedicated, and aggressive advocate for the principles of justice and equality. Such dedication has been recognized in her receipt of the Cecil B. Moore Community Service Award, and the Huey R. Burkett Service Award among others.
Joyce Eubanks a member of numerous organizations which include the National Bar Association Women Lawyers Division, Philadelphia Bar Association, Barristers Association of Philadelphia, National Association of University Women Philadelphia Branch, National Coalition of 100 Black Women Philadelphia Chapter, Philadelphia Congress of Black Women, 2000 African American Women, National Organization for Women (N.O.W.); she is a former Board member of Women Against Abuse. She received her Bachelor of Arts and a Juris Doctorate from Temple University.
