Candy Overload

Alternative Ideas to Giving Candy to Trick or Treaters

Ellen Folkman
Kids love to trick or treat at Halloween but between school parties and the actual trick or treating, kids are inundated with candy. Set your house apart from your neighbors by giving alternative, but cool treats. Five ideas to consider are:

Temporary tattoos. Elementary school kids love to wear these to school. Oriental Trading Company and some dollar stores stock all sorts of temporary tattoos. Party stores are another place to find them. Target's dollar bins may even have packages of temporary tattoos. You can stick with the holiday theme or popular kids themes like Sponge Bob, Bakugan, Spiderman, Superman, Disney Princesses and more.

Stickers. Kids, preschoolers especially, love stickers. If you're ambitious, make a small package of some stickers and temporary tattoos. Again, get some Halloween theme stickers or popular kids stickers. Retro stickers are fun for older kids. Oriental Trading Company has lots on their website. Find them at www.orientaltrading.com.

Pencils and erasers. Dollar stores sometimes have packages of pencils that are reasonably priced. Walgreen's often has seasonal specials on pencils. Matching erasers or theme erasers are a nice bundle treat. Sports theme erasers or animal erasers would be great choices.

Cold hard cash. I don't mean bills but coins are lots of fun and no one really gives them out anymore. It doesn't have to be much but I remember getting money in my bag as a child and it was great. Get a few rolls of pennies and nickles from the bank to keep the expense down and give a couple of each coin.

Glow sticks. Glow sticks are always popular whether you give the actual stick type or the thinner bracelet or necklace kind. Chances are the kids will crack them to glow right in front of you. These can be found at novelty shops, party stores and on-line. There are even some brands that change color right before your eyes. Last year I found packages of 10 at Michael's Arts & Crafts in their dollar bins. Glow stick necklaces and bracelets are a great way for kids to stay safe and be seen in the dark.
