Candy-Free Easter Egg Ideas

Alternatives to Candy for Stuffing Easter Eggs

Tracy DeLuca
Every year on Easter, kids around the US wake up to baskets of goodies and then have Easter egg hunts where they receive tons of candy. Chocolate coins, jelly beans and malted milk balls abound. For those of us who try to maintain a healthy diet for our children and limit their sugar intake, this can be a challenging holiday. Those fun plastic Easter eggs need to be stuffed with something great for the kids. Here are several ideas for stuffing eggs with something other than candy.

Easter Egg Stuffing Alternative 1

Coins - All children love money! Little children will think they are rich just be receiving a few pennies in their eggs. One idea would be to add a piggy bank to your child's basket and then they can put their coins in after finding eggs.

Easter Egg Stuffing Alternative 2

Bible Quotes, riddles, jokes - Using your computer and printer, find bible quotes, riddles and jokes to print out. Cut out each one and place within an egg! You can print them on colored paper for an even more fun alternative.

Easter Egg Stuffing Alternative 3

Stickers - Stickers are easy and fun for all kids. You can choose stickers in any theme you like, not just Easter. Cut the sticker sheets into individual stickers that will fit within the eggs. You can even purchase stickers of your child's favorite characters to make it even more fun.

Easter Egg Stuffing Alternative 4

Costume jewelry, toy jewelry - A great filler for little girls! Buy a cheap set of toy jewelry at the dollar store and separate the pieces into different eggs. You can also buy jewelry from gum ball machines! Use jumbo sized eggs for larger pieces.

Easter Egg Stuffing Alternative 5

Matchbox cars - Use jumbo eggs to fill with little matchbox cars.

Easter Egg Stuffing Alternative 6

Temporary Tattoos - You can purchase these in large quantities or out of gum ball machines if you only want a few. Purchase tattoos that match your child's interests such as fairies, butterflies, dragons, cars or even your child's favorite characters.

Easter Egg Stuffing Alternative 7

IOUs - Purchase larger toys or items and stuff the eggs with IOUs. Write out the name of the item and place it within the egg.

Easter Egg Stuffing Alternative 8

Exchange Eggs - Tell your children you will exchange a certain number of empty eggs for a toy of their choice from a treasure box. Fill the box with inexpensive toys and games. They will enjoy getting to choose their prize.

Easter Egg Stuffing Alternative 9

Prefilled Eggs - You can purchase prefilled Easter eggs that contain miniature toys rather than candy.

Easter Egg Stuffing Alternative 10

Treasure Hunt - Choose several eggs to stuff with hints. Make up a treasure hunt and stuff the eggs with clues and hints to lead your child to the end of the treasure hunt. When they find the last clue they get a special prize. You can use 10 clue eggs or even more.
