Buying or renting a violin is an intensely personal experience. My daughter has been learning violin with Suzuki method since she was five years old, beginning by renting a 1/10 size violin and currently owning a 3/4 size violin. When my daughter began her violin studies, I wanted to provide her with a quality instrument that would sound good as she progressed. My teacher recommended I visit Cannone violin shop to rent her violin, and I was immediately reassured by the owner that her needs would be taken care of with an appropriate instrument. Indeed, the instrument she rented was a late model violin in very good condition, that sounded as good as any 1/10 size (tiny!) violin could sound.

Renting my violin from Cannone Enterprises turned out to be a very smart decision, because as I paid the monthly rental fee, the amount was put towards the purchase price of her instrument. Before I knew it, her little violin had been paid off, and it was time to buy her a 1/8 size. I received a generous credit for her violin and a nice trade-up with a good sounding violin. Choosing a violin at Cannone takes some effort, but the atmosphere is very relaxed. I never feel hurried or pressured. I am offered a selection of instruments in my price range, and I bring my daughter to play each instrument for as much time as we need to make our decision. Once we decide which instrument she will take home, Rick inspects it thoroughly for cracks or damage that might affect the sound. If it needs new strings, he restrings it. If necessary, he even adjusts the sound post or bridge. He makes sure the bow is in good repair, and thoroughly tests and tunes it to ensure that it sounds as best as it can! Finally, I have always received my daughter's instrument in a good quality case that protects it from wear and tear.

I can't help but mention what a kind and personable man that Rick, the owner is. He always takes the time to make sure my daughter's needs are taken care of, and never fails to comment on how much her playing has improved, and how much she has grown! He takes a lot of pride in his profession, and his passion for providing the perfect stringed instrument to a student or professional is always at the forefront.

What can you expect at Cannone? Ddon't expect fancy surroundings with gleaming racks, sound-proofed booths or fancy sales personnel. The shop surroundings are low key, and you will notice the tools of the luthier trade (violin making and repair) front and center. The low-key atmosphere reminds me that the heart of this violin shop is the music, and its soul can be found in the way I am treated respectfully every time I call or walk in. Feel free to test or purchase a good range of accessories like chin rests, shoulder rests, strings and rosin to suit your immediate needs. Finally, if you've got a stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello) in need of tune-up or repair, or a bow needing rehairing, you will receive professional repairs at very reasonable prices.

It's best to give Rick at Cannone a call before you come. He schedules a time to meet with me so he can be prepared with violins in the desired size and price range. He makes sure the violins are tuned and ready to play before I even get there! I could not be a happier or more devoted customer of this violin shop. My daughter is progressing nicely with her new violin, and I am grateful to Rick and Cannone Enterprises for the dedication he has shown in helping us choose the best instrument as she grows and matures.

What a great find this is, Jennifer. A real neighborly shop that actually cares about the customer (and offers good deals on the violin, too). :o) Kudos to Rick for doing business the way it is supposed to be done. And kudos to you for telling us about his store, too!
