In the world of photography, customer loyalties tend to be fairly evenly split between Nikon and Canon products. While other brands such as Samsung or Fuji can also boast somewhat loyal followers, both Nikon and Canon currently reign as the kings of the photography industry. Quality products at competitive prices have helped these companies maintain their customer base. Additionally, the extensive line of digital single-lens reflex (also known as DSLR) cameras offered by both Nikon and Canon has also added credibility to these brands. However, Canon's latest announcement regarding an upgraded DSLR camera could easily result in Canon becoming even more of a dominant power in he digital media industry.
The Current Situation:
Currently, most artists who dabble in both photography and videography have to rely on entirely separate sets of equipment to enjoy their hobbies. While the quality of video recording that digital photography cameras can produce has drastically increased over the past five years, there still remains a marked difference between the videos shot by these cameras and the footage recorded on specialized video cameras. This same problem exists in reverse; while many video cameras can also be set to a "still picture" mode, the images produced by these cameras really can't fully rival those produced on DSLR cameras of comparable prices. Because of this, many artists have had to separate their video and photo work completely, simply because lugging around two different sets of cameras is both expensive and cumbersome.
Canon's Latest Answer:
Recently, Canon announced the development of a new DSLR camera-one that would combine the stellar qualities of some of its other DSLRs, with the addition of Canon's EOS videography capabilities. This new camera would offer both a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor and the ability to record about 4K of video. (The exact space for video recording would vary, depending upon the quality settings; the "4K" figure applies to footage recorded with motion-JPEG compression at a frame rate of 24P.) Additionally, with the announcement of the development of this new camera, Canon also declared the official launch of the company's Cinema EOS System; through this highly advanced technology which covers lenses, digital SLR cameras and digital cinema cameras, Canon fully entered the digital high-resolution production industry.
However, while the announced development of such a camera excited both photography and cinematography enthusiasts, the company has yet to disclose the expected arrival date of the product or the cost of the camera. Additionally, Canon chose to withhold the name and specs for this new technology. If this camera truly succeeds at combining excellent still frame and video footage, however, it will most likely become a best selling product, regardless of the exact price.
