Email Marketing Under the Can-Spam Act

Kirby Rooks
The Can-Spam Act is designed to protect the public from commercial spammers. This is not just aimed at bulk email messages but can be used against any commercial enterprise that sends emails to their customers for marketing purposes no matter how small the mailing.

The penalty for violation of the Can-Spam Act is expensive and can cost a commercial enterprise up to $16,000 per violation.

Tips for Compliance with the Can-Spam Act
Don't Use False or Misleading Header Information- This information must be accurate and identify who sent it and what company they represent as well as the purpose it was sent.

Don't Use Deceptive Subject Lines- Your subject line must be accurate.

Identify the Message, as an Advertisement- This must be disclosed in your message.

Tell Recipients Where You are Located- You must provide a physical address or PO Box from the town in which you are located.

Tell Recipients How to Unsubscribe to Future Emails from your Business- You must disclose in a conspicuous place an easy way for recipients to stop you emails if they so desire.

Honor Unsubscribe Request Promptly- You have 30 days to honor a opt-out request but the sooner the better.

Monitor what Other's are Doing on Your Behalf- You are still responsible for complying with the Can-Spam Act regardless if you outsource your email marketing.

Business Communications Skills

Everyone in the business and finance area should have basic business communications skills and how to operate in the marketing and sales area.

When utilizing your business communications skills in an email to potential customers it is important to be professional and courteous. Its only common sense that customers do business with those they like and admire.

The Can-Spam Act is a law that insures that you are professional and courteous when it comes to emails. There is way to much spam from the Internet and the federal government is helping to reduce the amount of unsolicited email. It is important that you follow these rules in order to do business with customers and potential customers.

Those that choose to be a distraction and to add to the spam being transmitted via email are in jeopardy of being accessed large fines, being dropped by major ISP's and are tarnishing the name of the company they are working for by pursuing customers with mounds of unsolicited email.

Learn the rules of business communications and follow them; not the fast track methods that the spammers of the world use.
