I feel your frustration with what should be a simple installation of a free PDF reader. I have never had problems before with installing any Adobe application. But Adobe has gone and juiced up the free version with more functionality and despite multiple tries, my laptop would just not download the larger file size of Adobe Reader 9.0. All you want to do is to read a PDF file off the internet. You're stopped dead in your tracks when the PDF you click suggests installing a new version of Adobe Reader 9.0. You go to the Adobe Acrobat site and click on the free PDF reader download of Adobe Reader 9.0. Thing are clicking on fairly well with the download of Adobe Reader 9.0 until at around 99% download, nothing seems to be happening. You wait a good 20-30 minutes and still nothing. So you decide to close out and start over again.

So as far as free, no fuss functionality without the hassle of installing Adobe Reader 9.0, I would highly recommend "PDF XChange Viewer".
