Canvas Bag Revolution

Learn How to Make a Statement with Your Green Friendly Reusable Bags

Amanda Abella
I speak from experience when I say that people who use canvas grocery bags (you know the kind they sell at Publix or whatever grocery store near you) aren't always aware of environmental topics nor do they have much interest. When I used to work for an environmental campaign in Florida I was shocked at just how many people I encountered who had succumbed to the "green fad" over those who actually understood what it meant to be green. It's cool to be green. While I agree with that statement, I believe it is cooler to be green and aware.

As artisans, jewelery makers, painters, buyers, sellers, and above all people on this earth, I propose we start a movement through our products. This can be something simple, like adding green living tips to your packaging. However, I believe we should take it a step further. Let's use the green fad to our advantage. Let us give people what they want and simultaneously educate them. Let's take those grocery bags as an example. You've seen the ones I'm talking about. They are pretty plain and generic and usually have the logo of the store. Chances are many of you out there could make one of those bags in your sleep. For those of you who are like me and completely challenged when it comes to a sewing machine, you can find these bags at your local craft store or you can buy them in bulk from Ebay.

After you have your bags, do what you do best, let the creative juices flow. Find your paint, needle and thread, and your super glue. Rummage through your house and reuse old fabric, buttons, and whatever you can find. Use these tools and your creativity to spread the green living message. Instead of writing tips out on a sheet of paper, try designing it on the bag. The same can be done on greeting cards, jewelry, pottery, and just about anything you can possibly make.

Expressing your message through different mediums is a good way to keep you on your toes creatively. Your work now has another purpose, new inspiration, and direction. Most importantly, by making your message appeal to a person's senses you are leaving them with an imprint rather than just words.
