Capital Punishment: Making Death Row Inmates Pay!
One of the reasons that Capital Punishment should only be considered as simple as cold-blooded murder is because the American society is being deprived. Deprived of what? They are being deprived of the contributions that the particular individual could make to society. Some people, however, do not see that keeping a killer alive would benefit society at all, and that may be true. But consider what prison inmates on death do. What do they do all day? They may have intermittent slots of time where they are allowed activity, but for the most part they stay in their prison cell.
If the same inmates on death row could do something productive for American society, why shouldn't they be sentenced to that? For example, a particular individual is guilty, pleads guilty, and is convicted of first degree murder. Instead of being shoved into a cell where they receive no contact with the outside world for years on end, and possibly until the end of their life, there should be a different standard as to what death row inmates should be sentenced to do. Instead of making them suffer for what crime they have committed, how about letting them pay for what they have done? Why not use death row inmates to build schools, help in soup kitchens, work on highways and roads, and do good works for their community and society? If this were allowed to happen, just think at what good could come from it! There are many implications of having a death row inmate work for his or her community; the government's Capital Punishment system most definitely should be reviewed to take into consideration other options, rather than killing the individual.
The United States' rates of Capital Punishment has lowered since 1999 and 2000, so that must certainly say something about the changing attitudes of the States. If only they would come to realize that they should make death row inmates pay for what they have done instead of letting them off the hook by killing them, there may be some extraordinary accomplishments by death row inmates! Indeed, having them do great things for the community might be just what they need, giving them a sense of pride and humility, as well as time to focus on what serious crime they have committed!
