The movie tells the story of two guys from New York (Ralph Macchio, the karate kid, being one of them) that are being wrongfully charged with a murder in Alabama and who enroll the help of Macchio's character cousin Vinny, to represent them. He has recently passed the bar on his sixth attempt ("sixth is the charmer" *) and has no real experience whatsoever.
Vinny Gambini (Joe Pesci) is one of those guys that just loves and lives to argue. The sort of people that would take position every time just for the sake of having a discussion about anything, and would never just accept to loose it ("Nobody pulls the wool over the eyes of a Gambini" *).
During the trial, he would do all kind of hilarious mistakes, and create a great deal of controversy with the Judge, what would put himself in jail on several occasions.
His fiancée Mona Lisa Vito (Marisa Tomei, who won an Oscar for her supporting role) evidently knows him and plays his game, completing the perfect match. They're interaction with the southern townspeople is simply fantastic.
There are several other mini-stories going on throughout the movie, as the inability of Vinny and Mona Lisa to find a place to spend the night where they really are left to sleep (either a train comes by, a farm blows a whistle, or animals make weird noises), or a town bully trying to trick them.
I wouldn't spoil the movie for you completing the plot and telling you how it unravels, of course. But let's just say that Vinny's ignorance of court procedure, paired with his attitude, make an explosive combo that would leave you laughing out loud.
The movie is fun, entertaining and memorable. The plot is simple but yet effective. The characters are clearly stereotypes, but really well played.
The chemistry between Vinny and Mona Lisa, along with the million ways Vinny makes the judge go crazy are the main features that keep the fun going on and on.
In summary, a must-see comedy that you will enjoy watching, once or over and over.
