Capo's Movie Review - Rachel Getting Married

Matias Colombo
I saw this movie last night, Rachel Getting Married, but I still don't get it... How on earth did Anne Hathaway got an Oscar nomination out of this movie? I mean, I'm not saying her performance was bad; the movie, on the other hand, surely was.

The movie tells the story of a family. One of the daughters (Rachel, of course) is getting married; the other one (Kym) is just getting out of rehab, and not getting used to life in the out while being sober.

The drama keeps piling on as the history is unraveled: the junkie killed her little brother by driving their car over a bridge and into a lake as a consequence of being high, parents got divorced and all sort of emotional pain flying around.

The plot revolves around the family relationship and how past events have seriously affected their personalities. That is the only thing you can get out of this movie. There's constant fight over nothing, other than Kym feeling he is being observed and criticized.

The movie tries to be interesting as being filmed in a sort-of documentary, sort-of out-of-a-camcorder way. You know, as if a guest of the wedding is doing a home video, that sort of photography, camera moving, people out of picture... I'm personally not a fan of that sort of filming.

As the story moves along (does it really?), it startles over the wedding preparation and the wedding itself. In fact, it spends so much time (or should I say "wastes so much time"?) on this that it gets to a point you feel exactly as if you were watching the wedding video of someone you don't know, a friend of a friend or something. You get bored and loose interest. People giving long boring speeches, people dancing and chatting.

It's really not worth the trip to the theater, definitively not worth the money you would pay to rent it and, at least for me, is not even worth the time of watching it while you could be doing other more entertaining things, like reading a book, staring at the ceiling or looking at your hair grow (yes, you heard me right).

The movie is sad, there's constant conflict, and there's not really a great message you take home.

This is one of the few movies I was thinking of stop seeing altogether. In fact, it was such a disappointment that I had to watch another movie right after this one ended, just to feel I didn't waste my movie night.

    Capo, ¿no estarás muy exigente?
Igual, yo no pierdo ni quince minutos frente al televisor. Un abrazo, Alphonse.
