Capped Pipe Secret Hiding Place

There are all sorts of inventions to keep others from getting their hands on things you cherish, or things you prefer to keep private. You could buy a safe, or put in an alarm system, but you really don't need all of that for just a handful of things you'd like to hide. Whether you want to put a spare house key outside, or you have a small stack of documents you want to hide from prying eyes, look to a spot beside your house as a secret hiding place. When you use a pipe, you create an accessible, commonplace arrangement, which looks so ordinary, that no one will pay it any attention at all.

A PVC pipe is something many people have outside their homes, right next to an outside wall. It could be a gas pipe, which has been capped off, or an old water line. When you place a black or white PVC pipe near your house, you can create an unexceptional look while making yourself a secret hiding place. Just go to your local hardware or home improvement store and purchase the pipe in a diameter you want; the pipes are available in various sizes. If you purchase the pipe at the home improvement store, they'll cut it for you for free, but if not, you can cut it with a hacksaw at home. Although you can make it any length you want, the average person should need only about a foot or so. At the same time you purchase the pipe, buy a cap to cover one end, or a cap for each end, depending on how you want the hiding place to be.

Dig a small hole, right next to the house, and insert the pipe. Pack the dirt tightly around it and put the cap on it. If you have a cap for each end, cap both ends now. A PVC pipe cap fits really tightly and you definitely don't want to struggle with it each time you add or retrieve something from your secret hiding place. To prevent that, apply a generous coat of petroleum jelly around the threads on the inside of the cap. This only needs to be done to the end that sticks out of the ground.

Once the pipe is in the ground your secret hiding place is finished. You can use it in several different ways. Tie a cord through the hole in a key, and tape the opposite end of the cord to the inside of the cap, on the flat end. Now you can lower your key into the tube and just remove the cap to retrieve it. If you want to store documents, roll them into a tube shape, and slide them into the pipe. Store other things, like jewelry or coins, by placing them in a freezer bag and rolling it into a tube shape.

No matter what you store in the secret hiding place, your business will be your business, because no one will ever suspect a thing. The pipe is best concealed when you stand it beside an air conditioning unit, an oil drum stand, or even behind a bush. You don't absolutely have to stand it up, though. You can lay the pipe directly on the ground, and then cover it partially with sticks, leaves, rocks, and similar things, to make it look like a capped drain pipe. However you arrange it you'll sleep better at night knowing that your valuables, or your secrets, are well-protected.
