Capture the Moment: Great Graduation Photo Taking Tips

Miss Marilyn
Graduation Day! The moment that you have waited for, to walk across the stage in your cap and gown. As the ceremony nears its end, you wonder how the pictures turned out. Did I smile in time? Did he get a good shot? Did he even get me or the girl behind me? Relax, this article will help you ensure that your photographer takes the perfect picture!

Get Yourself Ready for that Gorgeous Shot.
Most graduation ceremonies commence with welcoming the graduates into the auditorium. The behind the scenes process can be an extremely long wait. Make sure to take oil blotting tissues with you to absorb excess oil. Ladies, choose a hair style that will not require heavy brushing or maintenance. Try to use hair pins that will secure your cap to avoid any interference during the ceremony.

Avoid wearing glasses when on stage, as most cameras cannot avoid the reflection that comes with flash lighting. Prepare for the ceremony by reading the program ahead of time. This will allow you to prepare yourself for your turn to 'walk across the stage.' Wear natural makeup and practice taking pictures before the ceremony. Choose colors that will make you look vibrant, fresh and ready to take on the world.

Official Pictures
Often times, graduates are given the opportunity to take an official photo. Remember to attend the rehearsal ceremony and pay close attention to where the stairs are located. Look for a mark or cross on the stage that should indicate where you are to take your photo. Listen to the photographer for instructions and follow them. After the flash, quickly leave the stage to allow the next graduate the opportunity to take a great photo.

The next issue deals with parents or friends attempting to take pictures. Have a designated photo taker from your family to take a great shot. Practicing with them before the ceremony will ensure that you are ready for a great picture. Communicate with them regarding your seat assignment ahead of time. If possible, have them try to get a seat close to the stage. If not, having a quality camera with a zoom feature is a bonus.

The Camera Basics
The camera can and will make a difference. It is not necessary to bend your budget to get a new camera for this glorious occasion. However, it is recommended that you use a high quality digital camera to take great photos. Prepare by making sure your battery is fully charged and memory cards are clear. I prefer to use a Nikon SC7 camera that is simple and easy to use.

When shooting outside, try to position yourself so that the sun in not directly behind you (the graduate) or the shooter. This will avoid common squinting when you're outdoors.

Remember, this is your day and a priceless moment. Take a great picture that will last you a lifetime.
