Capturing the Unseen: A Devotional

Ruth Eshbaugh
There is a group of photographers I communicate with online. I have friends from all over the world. We connect through our photos and some of us through our faith. I purposely seek out people of faith who use their talent to tell people about God.

There is a young woman in particular who always touches me with her work. She photographs homeless teens, runaways who have left unbearable circumstances. She takes their portraits and loves on them. Her message to them is to let them know there is Hope. Her creative motto is Capturing the Unseen. I wrote her tonight and she wrote back and asked for prayer. It was definitely one of those God moments. I saw one of her photos; it is called A message of love sealed with a single tear.It hit me so deep inside that I felt like I needed to write her. It is so "weird" how God works. I am connected to a young girl I have never met. I may never meet her until we are in heaven. She loves photography and is drawn to the homeless like I am. She loves God. She walks with Him and struggles in that walk too.

I wanted to write about loving people and taking risks, because love is about taking risks. It feels like speaking in the dark, not knowing if you are heard, understood or loved back sometimes. We shouldn't wait and expect another to make us feel loved if we aren't willing to move in their direction. Moving towards another can even feel like being foolish. My Friend reminded me tonight to speak in the dark, when prompted by love. She reminded me of the risks we take we when love and walk with someone who struggles. There is no guarantee they won't disappoint us, but we risk and we walk.

I am so in awe of the God who connects us all.

Next time you sense you should reach out to someone, just do it. It is the prompting of the Holy Spirit and a confirmation that we are all part of the Body of Christ. We need each other. It is an invitation to love and to be more like our Father. It is our call.

Live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:1b -2

Love this, Ruth. I sensed a "reach out" moment this past Saturday while at a Moe's restaurant. Three teenage boys that I knew only by name -- I sort of "invited" myself to their table after sensing God's direction to do so -- and we all ended up with an amazing, real and heartfelt conversation. I love those moments! So special. :)
