The proper term for car break-in is, "Burglary from motor vehicle" (BFMV) or "Theft from motor vehicle" (TFMV).
BFMV means a suspect breaks into your car using force, such as smashing the windows with the intent of taking property from inside the car.
TFMV is when the suspect intentionally takes your property from the vehicle without using force such as, through an unlocked car door or rolled down window.
How to file the Police report
You are a victim and should file a Police report in the Police jurisdiction where the car break-in occurred. You can call the local Police department where the crime happened and find out what reporting options are available to you.
You may be able to file the report on-line, over the phone or in person by going to the Police station. Some Police departments may send a Patrol car to your location to take a report.
It is better that you go in person to the Police station so you can provide the Police with all the necessary first hand information needed for the report. The Police may want to take photos, finger prints or gather any evidence.
What you need to file the report
You will need proper identification to start the report. You do not need to be the registered owner of the car. Provide the Police with car registration and description of your car. To determine the window of time that the suspect broke into your car, the Police will need to know the date and time you parked your and the car was intact and then when you discovered the car broken into.
You will need a full description and value of all the property taken.
Why file a report
You are filing a report for several reasons. First, a suspect could be caught and brought to justice and held accountable for repairing or paying for damages and loss.
Filing Police reports also help the Police track where crime is occurring so they can put more Police resources in the areas where crime is highest.
You also file a Police report for insurance reasons. Your home or renters insurance may cover the damages and loss of property.
Filing a Police report can also be a write off at the end of the year on your income tax. Ask your taxman if you qualify.
Conclusion
Filing this Police report is a very simple process.
Once you have filed a report, make sure, that you always get your Police report case number and either a receipt that you filed a report or an actual copy of the report for your records.
